Mr. Robert Powers
141 N. Franklin St.
Delaware, OhioBIOGRAPHY: Dear Mr. Powers,
BIOGRAPHY: I am in receipt today of your letter of inquiry about my Fleming ancestors and to say the least, I am very much interested in the information you have given me. No, I do not have the old Fleming Bible, which I think you mean the one belonging to my
BIOGRAPHY: (pg. 131)
BIOGRAPHY: grandfather's father James, this I suppose would have the records of marriages, births and deaths.
My father's second cousin, Charles Fleming of Prospect, born and raised in, I think, Radnor Township has one, which is so old he never takes it out of the box in which he keeps it. Of course this might not have any records in it. It has been so long since I have seen it, that I do not remember. He might be able to tell you more about our ancestors. Also, you might get some information from the grave stones in Thompson Twp., Church cemetery as many of the old stock are buried there.
My father was John Matthew Fleming, son of John Sr. and Phoebe (Minter) Fleming, and his grandfather was the James who was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He was also the grandfather of Sarah Newhouse, mother of Clinton and Sophia Newhouse. I do not know how the Dunlaps and Crattys were connected with our family. I have heard my father speak of them many times. Dunlap was a common name. My father had a little brother, Joseph Dunlap who died at the age of 4 years.
I am very sorry that I do not know much about the Minters and should have made inquiry while my father and sisters were living. Grandmother had a sister, Ruth Minter, who lived with her and family. The name Minter occurs many times as a Christian or middle name amoung the younger generations of the family. As to the Crawfords I have nothing to add to your data. One of my father's older sisters bore the name of Margaret Crawford. She married John Dilsaver. After the Civil War they moved to Iowa. Mrs. Elizabeth C. Rigour was a first cousin of my father on his father's side. She had two children, Agnes who married a Codding, and Joseph, I imagine he was another Joseph Dunlap.
Moses Fleming, I think was a brother of my grandfather John Fleming and the grandfather of Moses E. Fleming formerly cashier of the Prospect Bank, who passed away almost 13 years ago. He was the son of Joseph Dunlap who died at Eden in 1889. He also had a daughter, Mary, a maiden lady who had a milner store in Delaware for years.
I hope you will find someone who can tell you what I am not able to, but all those who knew have passed on and the younger generation are not interested. If I can be of any help to you, I shall be glad to.BIOGRAPHY: Yours truly,
