Will of L.D. Williams, 23 October 1878

The following is the disposition which I desire to have made of my temporal effects in case of my decease. 1. The money which I have placed in the hands of my son-in-law Sidney G. Brock, I give to my daughter Mrs Louisa Brock. But the interest accruing from the same is to be paid to Olive T. my beloved wife during her natural life time after which it shall belong absolutely to the said Louisa Brock & her heirs. 2. The house and lot in Meadville occupied by my son Albert M. is to be given to his family and deeded to his wife Rachel & her heirs. The stock of goods in the drugstore of Williams & son shall belong to my said son Albert M but during the natural life of my said wife he is to pay her two hundred dollars per year. 4. My farm in Mead Tp. together with the stock & farming implements shall belong jointly & equally, until they can make an amicable division of the same, to my son Octavia and my daughter Mary Adella Wright and each of them to pay my said wife, their mother, one hundred dollars per year, during her life time. The stock which I have in the Meadville Water Company of $500 I will to my said wife Olive T. and also all other cash of my estate, after paying my debts and expenses of my funeral. 6. The coal interest embracing 1/15 of all the mineral under the lands which I owned and sold in connection with Samuel Griffith and others, and 1/15 of one farm not sold is to belong jointly and equally to my four children and their heirs.

Obituary of L.D. Williams, from the Meadville Crawford Journal, 17 October 1878

This gentleman lately deceased, had been a citizen of Meadville for thirty-two years. He was born in Cazenovia, near Syracuse, N. Y., March 7th, 1813. His father was a Methodist preacher of wide repute in that region. In 1837 he married Miss Warren of Geneseo, N. Y., who died by her husband's side this (Thursday) morning, after forty-one years of wedded life. In 1846 he was called from school near Akron, Ohio, to a professorship in Allegheny College, which he held until 1861; he then went as Chaplain of the 111th Pennsylvania Volunteers, his two sons and his son-in-law entering the service at the same time. After leaving the army he was variously engaged; his last active business being as postmaster. About a year ago his health failed, so as to prevent his re appointment, and he gradually declined, dying at his residence in the country at 7 A. M., Oct 14. Of such a man it remained to bury, not to praise him. No man among us was better known or had a larger esteem. He hardly seemed a clergyman, so much as a man of affairs, who did business in a devout and honorable mind, and with an energy fed by sixty-four years of unfailing health. He was of restless activity, yet when in his sixty-fourth year he began to break with the first illness of his life, he accepted his suffering without a murmur. His fortitude and silence in severe pain was most manly; his trust in his Savior was unfaltering.
