My impression is that neither Daniel nor Prudence made their home elsewhere that at Chester, Mass. From memory of childhood tales I judge that Daniel was a prudent and successful small farmer. The only story of him that remains bright enough to relate is his remark, made upon a visit west, presumably to Andover, OH or Meadville, PA "I vum! I can't kick over a hoss tird in this country without I find a debt under it against my son Artemas!"
Note of 1933.---- I was mixt in my geography in the writing above. Chester and Chesterfield are adjoining towns, not identical as I had supposed. The Smiths were of Chester. When, in 1783, Middlefield was erected, their habitate was set off to the new town.
